Preventing Mechanisms

Friday January 19, 2007

Activity Due to Unique Combination of Plant Nutrients

EAST WAREHAM, Mass. - A new research review and study examines how cranberry's unique flavonoid compounds -- which act as potent antioxidants -- have been further linked to potential anti-cancer properties. Led by Dr. Catherine C. Neto of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and funded in part by the Cranberry Institute and the Wisconsin Cranberry Board, this review is the first to examine the effects of cranberry polyphenols on human cancer cells, in order to further explore cranberry's potential role in cancer prevention. The review was published in the current edition of The Journal of Nutrition and presented as a part of the International Research Conference on Food, Nutrition, and Cancer, hosted by the American Institute of Cancer Research in Washington, D.C. in July 2006.

The review explores the existing research and recent findings on the anti-cancer properties of the cranberry, and its diverse phytochemical profile that likely plays a role in cancer prevention. Cranberries' high antioxidant content is one of the many factors that work synergistically to create observed anti-tumor activities. "The results from in vitro studies using a variety of tumor models show that the polyphenol extracts from cranberry inhibit the growth and spread of breast, colon, prostate, lung, and other tumors," said Dr. Neto.

"This review is so significant because it adds to the growing body of evidence of both the proven and emerging health benefits of the cranberry," said Martin Starr, PhD, science advisor to the Cranberry Institute.

The cranberry has long been recognized for its potential health benefits, from prevention of urinary tract infections and gum disease via a unique anti-adhesion mechanism, to its high level of antioxidants, which may also provide protection from cardiovascular disease. These new findings reinforce earlier research on cranberry's anti-cancer benefits and show promise that cranberry may limit processes involved in tumor development and growth in human patients.

In a recent study published in the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry, researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles tested the extracts of six berries, including cranberry, against human tumor cell lines in cell cultures. Cranberry extract was shown to be effective in slowing cancer cell growth, a protective benefit that increased with the amount of extract added.

The evidence is compelling, especially for consumers looking to add healthier foods to their diet. "It's easy for consumers to add functional foods such as cranberries in their diet by eating dried cranberries as a snack or drinking a glass of cranberry juice once a day. And, apart from helping maintain wellness, cranberries taste great," said Jere Downing, Executive Director of the Cranberry Institute.

Good morning! Rejuvenate your recipe collection by
adding the vibrant color and sweet, tangy taste of the cranberry and wow
Mom or Dad on their special day -- or your family every day -- with easy
meals that deliver big flavor.
No matter what the season, cranberries pair well with just about
anything. From sweet to savory, their versatile flavor adds a new dimension
to almost every dish. Although fresh cranberries are only available during
the fall months, that great cranberry flavor comes in many forms and can be
enjoyed year-round in the form of juice, sweetened dried cranberries and
sauce. Pick your favorite and let the creativity begin.
Kick start Mom's day the healthy way with a luscious Mixed Berry
Smoothie made with Ocean Spray(R) Cranberry Juice Drink, or a surprisingly
sweet sprinkle of Craisins(R) Sweetened Dried Cranberries in your breakfast
bowl. Craisins(R) Crunch Breakfast Bowl is a combination of Craisins, your
favorite yogurt, granola and bananas. Look for Craisins(R) in a larger 12
oz. resealable pouch, perfect for all your baking and topping needs.
Need a dinner idea fit for the world's best mom or dad? Try Chicken
Tenderloins with Cranberry Mustard Sauce. Ocean Spray(R) Jellied Cranberry
Sauce provides an easy start for a fabulous finish in less than 30 minutes.
Finish the meal off with a treat to let Mom know how sweet she is!
Cranberry White Chocolate Parfaits are beautifully layered desserts that
adults and kids alike will appreciate.
Cranberries are not only great for recipes, but they also offer a
variety of health benefits. Research shows that the unique anti-adhesion
properties of the cranberry's proanthocyanidins, or PACs, can prevent
bacteria from sticking to the urinary tract, stomach, and mouth -- helping
to ward off infection. However, bacterial protection may not be the only
health benefit jam-packed into the tiny cranberry. Cranberry PACs also
function as antioxidants -- and with far more PACs per gram than most other
fruit, cranberries bolster the body's defenses against free radical damage
that can contribute to many chronic diseases including heart disease.
For more spring recipes, visit http://www.oceanspray.com.

Mixed Berry Smoothie

3/4 cup Ocean Spray(R) Light White Cranberry Juice Drink
3/4 cup frozen mixed berries (strawberries, raspberries, blackberries
and blueberries)
1 6-ounce container low fat berry-flavored yogurt
1/2 banana, cut into slices
Combine all ingredients in a blender. Just as the English loved limes, American sailors craved cranberries. It was the cranberry's generous supply of vitamin C that prevented scurvy.

Only three major fruits are native to North America -- the cranberry, blueberry and Concord grape.

If all the cranberry bogs in North America were put together, they would comprise an area equal in size to the tiny island of Nantucket -- approximately 47 square miles.

Native Americans used cranberries to make a survival cake known as pemmican. They also used the fruit in poultices and dyes.

American recipes containing cranberries date from the early 18th century.

The hearty cranberry vine thrives in conditions that would not support most other crops: acid soil, few nutrients and low temperatures, even in summer.

Contrary to popular belief, cranberries do not grow in water. They are grown on sandy bogs. Because cranberries float, some bogs are flooded when the fruit is ready for harvesting.

Every acre of cranberry bogs is supported by four to 10 acres of wetlands, woodlands and uplands. This area offers refuge to a rich variety of wildlife.

Check out the Pacific Coast Cranberry Web. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, chair of the Senate Finance Committee, and Rep. Joe Barton, R-Texas, chair of the House Energy and Commerce Committee.

Concerns about how the FDA handled high-profile drug safety cases — two were Vioxx, the painkiller linked to heart attacks and strokes, and antidepressants, linked to suicidal behavior in children — spurred the request.

"GAO observed that there is a lack of criteria for determining what safety actions to take and when to take them," the report states, noting that FDA officials, given a chance to review a draft, called its conclusions "reasonable" but did not comment on its recommendations.
In an interview Friday, Grassley said the report backs up "what everybody seems to know, that the FDA needs reform, that things that go on in the FDA don't really protect the consumer. The FDA is kind of a Good Housekeeping seal of approval on drugs, and really, it's questionable (whether) they should have that honor."

In a statement, Barton said the GAO "shows that the drug-safety system is not in crisis, but the FDA's process may need some fine-tuning. Prescription drugs approved by the FDA should keep you out of the hospital, not send you to one."
Grassley and Sen. Chris Dodd, D-Conn., introduced a bill a year ago calling for an FDA Center for Postmarket Drug Evaluation and Research that would be on an equal footing with the existing Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, or CDER.
Currently, both the Office of Drug Safety (ODS) and the Office of New Drugs (OND) are part of CDER, an arrangement that results in a "dangerous imbalance of power between postmarket safety and the reviewing decision," said Sidney Wolfe, head of the Public Citizen Health Research Group. The consumer advocate called the GAO's proposed remedies "necessary, but grossly insufficient."

The GAO does not specifically advise taking the drug safety office out of CDER but recommends that the FDA commissioner clarify its role. For now, "ODS serves primarily as a consultant to OND," the report says. Yet, it notes, the new drugs office has sometimes excluded analyses by drug safety staffers at advisory committee meetings held to review particular medications.
The GAO also recommended that Congress consider expanding the FDA's authority to require drugmakers to conduct postmarket safety studies. The agency sometimes asks for such studies as a condition of approval, but from 1991 to 2003, only a quarter were completed, the report said.

"I wish it had gone further," Arthur Levin, head of the non-profit Center for Medical Consumers, said of the GAO report. Levin, who's on the FDA's risk management advisory panel, noted that the GAO didn't mention empowering the agency to fine drugmakers for not doing postmarket studies. The FDA needs "not just more authority," he says, "but more authority with clout."

http://www.usatoday.com/news/health/2006-04-23-fda-safety_x.htm

HERE is the best place for cranberry recipes. As these drugs have been linked to heart attack, sudden death and the appearance of psychotic symptoms in children, not generally at risk for such, this is definitely a positive move.

But going a step further, the validity of the diagnosis of "ADHD" should also be questioned. In 1998, a group of psychiatrists and doctors attended the U.S. National Institutes of Health consensus conference on "Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder," (ADHD) and attempted to establish the criteria for diagnosing this so-called psychiatric disorder.

They failed.

Not only did they fail, but the only "certainty" that resulted, by their own admission, was a total inability to even define the symptoms of the ADHD label, with one of the "experts" called upon literally fumbling with words for minutes on end.

See video footage of this remarkable meeting, including the startling concluding admission made by the conference chairman, on CCHR's website by clicking the link below.

Watch the video!

Did you know that there's a magazine that's all about cranberries???? The cranberries are starting to turn red. I've eaten all of the blueberries, and the blackberries are ripening by the minute.

The cranpups LOVE blackberries, especially Bo. I picked blackberries yesterday for 30 minutes or so. I threw him one about every 7-10 seconds. He never did get full. He gulped down every single one. Freckles is more independent. She picks them off the vine herself.

The cranpups also just discovered that there are finally cranberries. It's all I can do to keep them away from the edge of the cranberry fields. They sit there and eat all the berries they can reach from the edge! Silly dogs.

Not much happening in cranberry land lately. We're just mowing and weeding... weeding and mowing. We have been catching lots of bee swarms this year. It's been a lot of fun. I put on a bee suit the other day for the first time and went up to a swarm and helped them into a hive. It was really fascinating and amazing.

The cranpup's are doing great! They've been enjoying swimming in the ponds more now that the weather is warmer. One of them smells like a skunk... I have yet to get close enough to find out which.

On my Royal Ruby Cranberries site...
